The right to know and understand - OSHA HazCom Training
OSHA’s new Hazard Communications (HazCom) standard includes the Global Harmonization System (GHS) for classifying and labeling hazardous chemicals.
Did you know that exposure to hazardous chemicals is one of the most serious dangers facing American workers today?
That is why OSHA revised their Hazard Communication Standard – to improve the quality, consistency and clarity of hazard information that workers receive, making it safer for workers to do their jobs and easier for employers to stay competitive in the global marketplace.
GHS benefits workers by reducing confusion about chemical hazards in the workplace, facilitating safety training and improving understanding of hazards, especially for low literacy workers. OSHA's standard classifies chemicals according to their health and physical hazards, and established consistent labels and safety data sheets for all chemicals made in the United States (and those imported from abroad).
OSHA’s compliance to the new standard has two deadlines that facilities must meet:
- December 1, 2013 – All employees must be trained on the new Label Elements and SDS format.
- June 1, 2016 – All employers shall, as necessary, update any “alternative” workplace labeling, update the hazard communication program, and provide any additional employee training for newly identified physical or health hazards
